John Piper at River and Rowing Museum

Hello

Thanks for visiting.

There's a new John Piper Gallery at the Sir David Chipperfield designed River and Rowing Museum in Henley.

I'm rather a fan of John Piper's work, especially his stained glass windows, do see the label above for lots more posts on his work.

Here's a link to a Culture24 article, from which the above photo comes, which shows more of the gallery as I was unable to take any photos.

John Piper lived in Fawley Bottom not far from Henley for most of his life.  His work during the 20th Century was very diverse ranging from painting, collage, drawing, stained glass, ceramics, tapestry, set design and textiles and the new gallery is the first permanent exhibition of his work.  The money to set up the gallery was raised by crowd-funding through the Art Fund.

Along with work from private collections, there will be a constantly evolving display of loans from galleries such as the Tate, V&A and Arts Council.

  1. I looks like a great place, it's a bit far for me to visit at the moment but I'm very happy that it exists.

We have an Art Pass and it's great to know we're helping to fund great art all over the country.

    1. I have an Art Pass too, It's been so useful and I've visited places that I wouldn't have known about as well as helping to save some great works for future generations to enjoy.

  4. Looks fascinating. I'm going to Henley on Saturday but I don't think I'll have time to visit so I'll have to put it on my list. x

    1. Well I'm blowed, what a co-incidence! I've another couple of posts to go on Henley but I expect you will be too busy to do much exploring. Have a great time. x

  5. Looks like a lovely new gallery at the musuem. I was trying to remember where I had seen a collection of John Piper's paintings many years ago and I think it was at Renishaw Hall in Derbyshire:)
