Five on Friday - Trip to View Island

Hello and welcome!

I hope you've had a good week.  There's been all sorts going on here, mainly because the sun's out - it makes such a difference, doesn't it! Even the usual and the mundane looks a tad exciting with blue skies.

Somehow I've discovered a new island in the River Thames. Of course it's been there forever but now it has been spruced up and is View Island. Even the lock keeper didn't know it's name and it was practically in his garden.  I was lured there with the hope of finding some chainsaw sculptures but they didn't materialise, it's really a wildlife sanctuary - a perfect haven for all things natural, a bit off the beaten track. Here's how I got there.

One  - Off the train at Reading and under the railway line.

Two - Across Caversham Lock and over the weir.

The lock gates had jammed shut for some reason,  so the boat would have to wait while the lock keeper  got the situation under control.

The teeny tiny lock keeper's office with some beautiful flowers around it.

The water gushed furiously under the weir bridge whilst on the outher side it was as flat as a pancake.

The lock workshops were painted with an Olympic 2012 mural depicting features of Reading

Three - On to the Island

Map of View Island

Completely covered by wild plants, View Island had footpaths, benches,  a learning centre and views over the Thames.

Four - Heading back to the train, back under the railway and through the town

Chatham Place development completed with a green with plaques showing historical happenings taking place in the town.

Have a look at these adverts, again of an historical nature! Quite a scream really!!

Past the for sale signs - look at that sky!

Down Broad Street

Five - Into the station for a teeny ice cream!

Raspberry sorbet - yum!

Thanks for visiting.  Do have a look at Amy's Five on Friday link for more.

See you soon.

    1. Actually it was! The ice cream lady also gave me a few plastic spoons with tasters of some of the other flavours, but I'm not admitting to that!!

  16. Thanks for some views to, on, and from View Island! A few weeks ago I "found" a Japanese garden that I had passed by nearly every week for ten years, but in my defense it can't be seen from the road I travel :) mmmm that raspberry sorbet looks so good...I'm glad you enjoyed it! xx
